It’s looking like a spooky, steamy weekend.
- Friday is all about venturing out & getting a jump-start on the Halloween action. Head to Jungle Island’s Halloween Spooktacular from 11am-5pm for trick or treating, live music, cookie decorating, arts & crafts and $13 admission ($7 for kids 3-10 in full costume). Or, do double duty from 6:30-8:30pm and bring your costumed kids to Whole Foods Coral Gables for trick or treating and grocery shopping. Come sunset, head to Grapeland Water Park from 6-10pm for a Family Fright Night filled with bounce houses, hay rides and train rides or get spooky at Gold Coast Railroad Museum’s Halloween Adventure or the Miami Science Museum’s Haunted House.
- Saturday it’s all about your neighborhood. Get a group together, costume the kiddies and head out for some collective trick-or-treating. Halloween is the ultimate holiday to host – invite everyone over 30-60 minutes before you want to leave, lay out some simple snacks (veggies & dip, chicken fingers, fruit salad), pull out some flashlights or glow sticks, lead the group on a candy adventure, then return home for candy swapping & sorting and adult take-out (kids will be too busy gorging on sugar).
- Alternately, head to one several neighborhood celebrations around town. Miami Beach celebrates with a Family Fun Day at the Botanical Gardens featuring pumpkin carving, cookie decorating and more. Biscayne gets in on the action with afternoon-long Mimoween stocked with front porch snacks, costume parties and more. Coral Gables gets spooky with Halloween on the Mile featuring trick or treating, a scavenger hunt and a haunted house. Pinecest goes trick or treating at Evelyn Greer Park and Aventura goes Harvest Happy at the community center.
- Sunday is recovery day. Sleep in and get creative with breakfast/brunch. We’re thinking pumpkin pancakes, Halloween milkshakes and apple cinnamon oatmeal. Take a long family walk to burn off some off the sugar rush then spend some time sorting candy – throw out anything that looks opened, tampered with or homemade and divide the rest into keep and giveaway piles.
